The Kairos Report

About The Kairos Report
In an age of loudness and distraction, I am dedicated to discerning our times through a quest for social and spiritual renewal. I’ve spent forty years seeking to build alternatives of hope across the divides in our world—from 17 years of grassroots work in Jackson, Mississippi to 10 years co-founding a Center for Reconciliation at Duke University; from 6 years in New York City engaging diplomats and briefing UN Security Council members to 10 years pursuing the way of healing in East Africa and between North Korea and South Korea.
This newsletter, rooted in Christian faith, is where I draw on those decades to discern the signs of our times. I see my task to be a steward of light: the art of uncovering and making visible the meaningful, the valuable, and the beautiful. This I believe: The way things are is not the way things have to be.

Why “kairos”? My commitment
“The time [kairos] has come. The kingdom of God has come near.”
These words of Jesus from the Gospel of Mark capture the essence of time not as a ticking clock, but as a window of opportunity. I seek to interpret what is happening in our world—what I call “reading the signs of the times”—as a kairos: an opportunity for transformation and renewal rather than retreat.
I strive to bring curiosity, humility, and prophetic discernment to everything I write—from global headlines and uncomfortable truths, to the arrival of herons in my local park. I believe in holding the tensions of lament and hope, pain and beauty, with grace and nuance. I invite you to walk the path with me.
