About The Kairos Report
In an age of loudness and distraction, how do we discern the deeper signs of our times?
Published once a month, The Kairos Report is a reflective newsletter where I seek to uncover the meaningful, the valuable, and the beautiful in our world. Rooted in Christian faith, looking at and beneath the headlines through my lifelong quest for renewal, I seek to approach our time as a kairos—a critical opportunity for transformation and renewal.
My life journey is full of interruptions; I’ve never done anything I expected to do. In The Kairos Report, I seek the unexpected. I believe a simple, profound truth: The way things are is not the way things have to be.
To this writing, I bring over forty years of building alternatives of hope across some of the world’s deepest divides:
· Grassroots community-building and social healing in Jackson, Mississippi.
· Co-founding and directing the Center for Reconciliation at Duke University.
· Creating initiatives of healing and social repair in East Africa and Northeast Asia.
· Engaging global diplomats and briefing UN Security Council members in New York City.
My writing journey is shaped by four published books (including Reconciling All Things, now in five languages), three Christianity Today Book Awards, and three decades of speaking and teaching globally on social renewal.
I love the Great Outdoors, the beautiful game, spy novels, an occasional cigar shared with a friend, the land of Korea where I grew up, and Durham, North Carolina where I live now. My life was nearly broken by over-activism; I learned to love contemplation and silent retreat. My journey fills me with wonder.
The format

Why “kairos”?
“The time [kairos] has come. The kingdom of God has come near.” — The Gospel of Mark
These words capture the essence of time not as a ticking clock (chronos), but as a distinct window of opportunity. I seek to interpret the complex events of our world as a timely invitation to transformation and renewal rather than a reason to retreat.
I strive to bring curiosity, humility, and prophetic discernment to everything I write—from global headlines and uncomfortable cultural truths to the quiet arrival of a heron in a local park. I seek to hold the tensions of lament and hope, pain and beauty, with grace and nuance.
